MUSIC MARATHON
Big Bach bash brings back baroque
Music Preview - Calgary Fast Forward Newspaper - October 28 - November 3, 2004
by Kenna Burima
No other composer in music history has exerted more influence than Johann Sebastian Bach. His contribution to the canon of classical music is so vast that an entire musical era - the baroque period which ran from 1650 to 1750 - was defined by his death.
Although history initially failed to recognize Bach as a visionary, now, more that 250 years later, entire chapters of academic texts are dedicated to his life and music.
the Calgary Bach Festival Society has been contributing to Bach veneration for 17 years, hosting one of the most monolithic concert events Calgary has ever experienced - the society's annual Bach Marathon. Dedicating six hours to Bach and his contemporaries, the Marathon brings together Calgary's entire classical music community in celebration of a man who gave so much to the development of Western music.
Diane Antoniuk, volunteer and publicist with the society, admits that it takes a lot of work to organize the event. Along with the Bach Festival chorus there are more than 100 musicians.
"The community really steps up. Most musicians are volunteering their time," says Antoniuk. "It's a labour of love, otherwise it wouldn't happen."
It's the music that brings the community together, and while members of the Bach Festival Chorus are no doubt intimately familiar with the work of the master, Antoniuk says that Bach is actually better known to people than they might think.
"Bach is incredibly complex and at the same time easy listening," she says. "Mathematicians look at his music and marvel at its complexity, but at the same time a beginner can sit down and pick through his music. Bach really runs through our culture the same way that Shakespeare plays do. We hear Bach's music in elevators, in malls, so when we hear his music performed, we may not know it but we're familiar with it. A regular person coming to the marathon will probably recognize a lot of the music being performed."
